IN Anambra, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Monday solicited the support of Political Parties, stakeholders towards mobilising eligible residents to participate actively in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), exercise.
Dr. Orji Nwachukwu, INEC Resident Electoral Commission (REC), made the appeal during a meeting held in it state headquarter with party chairmen and other stakeholders in Awka.
He said the active participation of stakeholders, especially traditional and religious leaders, Market Men/Women would greatly assist the commission in capturing eligible voters.
Nkwachukwu who disclosed that about sixty thousand Permanent Voters Card has so far been collected in the state explained that INEC was currently rotating its personnel across the state to ensure that it registered all eligible residents.
He said the personnel would also attend to voters seeking to transfer their voting units from where they were originally registered to other locations among others.
According to him, a common good would be experienced if all stakeholders keep fate with their own side of the bargain as enshrined in the constitution and the Electoral Act.
He also said additional Registration centres will be mounted in all the eleven Tertiary Institution located across the state.
“We have also reached out to leaders of political parties, development associations and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to fully mobilise their eligible members to register,” he said.
Nkwachukwu also called on the mass media to initiate more enlightenment programmes that would help educate residents to get registered to enable them to elect credible leaders during next year polls.
Hon. Ndubuisi Nwobu, the Chairman People Democratic Party PDP, in Anambra State said that the meeting was timely and would achieve meaningful results.
Nwobu said that the commission had drawn their attention towards working together with the concerned stakeholders in the State and promised that they would partner with the body ahead of successful general election come 2019.
