A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Honourable Damilare Abioro, has called on the Federal Government to consider enlisting graduating members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the end of their one-year mandatory service.
According to him, vacant positions in the public sector can be filled with the teeming young graduates to make the country’s civil service more vibrant.
Abioro, who made the call in his congratulatory message to the outgoing Batch B Stream 2 NYSC members in Apapa Local Government Area, said there is a need to reform the NYSC Scheme for optimal performance and nation-building.
The NNPP chieftain explained that the acute shortage of manpower in many sectors can be addressed through the meaningful engagement of fresh graduates to fill the gap.
He added that the rising number of existing workforce members who have gone in search of greener pastures abroad (Japa syndrome) has depleted the staff strength of various critical sectors, including health and education.
According to him, other factors such as retirement, death, and voluntary resignation have contributed to the increased workload on the remaining workers in the public sector.
“We cannot be producing thousands of graduates year in and year out and still be facing the challenges of acute or inadequate shortage of manpower in our public sectors and institutions. The government needs to fashion out ways to fill these vacancies with the array of graduating youths who could have been engaged to understudy at the vacant sectors during the one-year National service,” he stated.
Abioro thanked the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, Lagos State Coordinator, Mrs. Yetunde Baderinwa, Apapa Local Government Inspector, and the President of Gender and Charity Community Development Society (CDS), Anams Prince Chidubem, for the successful completion of the one-year mandatory service for the batch.
