In a powerful display of environmental activism, scores of climate advocates took to the streets of Abeokuta on March 1, 2024, as part of the “Insure Our Future Global Week of Action.”
The rally, organised by Eco Diversified International, targeted insurance companies and their role in enabling fossil fuel projects around the world.
Gathered at the Oba Odeleye Park in Ori-omi, Sokori, the crowd marched through the streets of Abeokuta, carrying placards and chanting slogans that echoed their demand for insurance companies to stop insuring fossil fuels.
The diverse group of participants, comprising students from tertiary institutions across Abeokuta, climate advocates and professionals, sent a resounding message to the insurance industry and policymakers.
According to the Vice President of Eco Diversified International, Ogunsola Folakunmi, the urgency of the climate crisis demands immediate action from all stakeholders, including insurance companies.
He specifically called on insurance companies to cease providing insurance for new fossil fuel projects and phase out coverage for existing coal, oil, and gas projects.
“For too long, insurance companies have funded oil, gas, and coal projects that threaten our communities. Their insurance makes these climate-wrecking projects possible, and we demand accountability.
“By insuring dirty fossil fuels, these corporations are complicit in harming public health and violating basic human rights. They are undermining Nigeria’s climate progress and must be held accountable. We won’t stop fighting until the insurance industry drops fossil fuels for good!
“And that is the more reason why I want to commend climate activists for coming out today to take a stand against the fossil fuel industry and demand accountability. Young people deserve to inherit a livable planet. As climate change advocates, we will keep working to transition Nigeria to renewable energy and create the green jobs of tomorrow. We believe through open dialogue and non-violent activism, we can build a more sustainable future for all.” he said.
Collectively, the activists stressed that the impacts of climate change, such as flooding, heat waves, and pollution, are already being felt in communities across Nigeria and beyond. “Our message is clear – stop insuring our destruction!”
They vowed to continue their efforts, calling on individuals, communities, and leaders to join the movement for a sustainable future.
Others emphasised the need for accountability and transparency from both government and corporate entities. “We cannot solve this crisis without holding those responsible accountable for their actions.”
