Calcium supplements and kidney stones

I have been placed on a one-month course of calcium supplements in order to hasten my recovery from a bone fracture. I am however worried if the calcium stones cause kidney stones. I will appreciate your kind advice.

Yes, taking large doses of calcium supplements, especially without food, can increase the risk of kidney stones. When taken without food, calcium supplements can pass through the urine and form crystals and stones. The body can only handle 600 milligrams of calcium at once, so extra calcium can build up in the bloodstream and be excreted through the kidneys.

To reduce the risk of kidney stones, you can; take calcium supplements with a meal, drink 8 to 10 ounces of liquid each hour you’re awake, or at least 2 liters per day and cut down on foods rich in oxalate, such as certain fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, and bran cereals or breads.
