As announced by the returning officer for Oyo South Senatorial election, Professor Wole Akinsola, at Ibadan North Local Government Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, on Monday morning,
Balogun polled 105,720 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who had 92,218 votes.
Out of the nine local government areas that make up the senatorial district, the PDP led in six local government areas while the APC led in three local government areas.
Next to the PDP and the APC in valid votes cast are the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its candidate, incumbent Senator Soji Akanbi who polled 49,437 votes while the Action Democratic Party (ADP) and its candidate, Fola Akinosun had 13,149 votes.
A breakdown of the results showed that in Ibarapa East, PDP had 9,982 votes while APC polled 6,951 and ADC had 3,670 votes.
For Ibarapa North, PDP had 8,083 votes, APC polled 5,837 and ADC had 2,536 votes.
As against APC’s votes of 8,916 votes, in Ibadan North West, PDP polled 12,144 votes while ADC had 5,819 votes.
In Ibadan North, PDP had a total of 18,690 votes, APC 17,947 votes while ADC amassed 10,202 votes.
In Ido local government, APC polled 8,668 votes ahead PDP’s 8,108 votes while ADC had 5,265 votes.
For Ibarapa Central, APC had the highest votes of 7,147 followed by PDP with 6,577 votes, then ADP had 1,965 votes while ADC polled 1,475 votes.
Meanwhile, in Ibadan North East, PDP amassed a sum of 14,865 votes, while APC had 9,077 votes and ADC recorded a showing of 9,524 votes.
In Ibadan South West, APC had 16,639 votes, PDP garnered 15,978 votes, while ADC had 11,024 votes.
For Ibadan South East, the APC had 11,036 votes, PDP polled 11,293 votes, while ADC had 10,082 votes.
Prior to the declaration of results, however, Public Relations Officer of the APC, Dr Azeez Olatunde reported disturbances at Ward 2, 3 and 4 in Ibadan South East local government area which he said could affect the final result.
He argued that the petition should be attended to because the affected wards had 24,146 votes and were more than the margin of victory between PDP and APC which is 13,502 votes.
The returning officer, Akinsola, however said the issues raised in the petition had to be investigated and will be reported to appropriate organs of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for action, urging the APC to follow up on its petition.
Speaking at his residence after his victory, Balogun said he will use the office to serve humanity, God and leave lasting legacies.
While expressing happiness at his victory, he vowed to be an apostle of restructuring the country to guarantee resource control, fiscal federalism, devolution of more powers to states.
