The approval for the reconstruction of the blood-sucking road to a dual carriage way was granted in 1999, during his first four years single tenure of office under the PDP government led by President Olusegun Obasanjo.
I can vividly recall that immediately after the turning the sod of its reconstruction in lbadan, the capital city of Oyo State, work began in earnest with accelerated attention, thus convincing people that the road would be completed within the duration of two to four years. Surprisingly, it was not to be as expected until Obasanjo’s eight years administration expired. The same scenario unfolded in 2017, when late Umaru Yaradua was voted into power. Though, a serious attempt was made by his administration, towards making the road project completed in earnest and thus became passable to the motorists.
Without sounding rhetoric, pragmatic efforts were made by Buhari’s government within a good frame of time, by paying the contractors handling the project through “sukuk free interest loan”. This development in all honesty, brought ecstasy to the mind of the road users but their joy was short-lived, owing to the snail-speed working condition on the road.
As a good citizen of the country, l am perplexed at how many blood of Nigerian citizens that is being spilled and how much more will be spilled before the road is finally completed? After several strenuous and fruitless attempts and pleas made by the people to the Federal Government to ensure the completion of the road, the situation persists. The Federal Government should address this issue with the urgency it requires to stop the needless waste of lives on this road.
