A woman, Bukola Lateef has approached Ile Tuntun Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking a divorce from his husband, Ademola Lateef.
Bukola told the court that her husband aside being negligent of.her welfare and that of their children was fond of beating her.
She thus urged the court to dissolve their union and grant her custody of their only child.
“My husband started beating me a month after I had our baby.
”He gets unnecessary worked up any time we argue and will descend on me with heavy blows.
“He has told me on many occasions that I am still young and can always leave him for another man.
“Any time he beats me, he will call my parents and inform them that he has beaten me and that they should come for me. He would even tell them that if they don’t come early, they would meet my corpse, “Bukola stated.
“He stopped giving me and our child feeding allowance and abandoned his responsibilities in the home.
“I became frustrated and took ill.
“My parents came for me when they saw I wasn’t receiving adequate care and attention from him.
“My thinking was that he would come to my parents’ house to beg them, but the reverse was the case. He came to our place and fought with my parents.
“He vowed not to carry out his responsibility on our child unless he was handed over to him, “she concluded.
“I have never raised my hand to beat my wife since we got married. And she also lied that Iam not caring. I provide the home with foodstuff every month and also give her feeding allowance, “Ademola told the court.
“My wife is stubborn and has always turned deaf ears to all I tell her.
“I discovered that she was going to church and I warned her against this. I told her we are Muslims and thus don’t have any business with going to church.
“I told her parents and they promised to talk to her.
“She later took ill and went to her parents’ home.
“My thinking was that they were going to take her to the hospital, but I was surprised when I was called upon to go with her to see a pastor who is her mother’s relative.
“I refused and walked out on them.
“Her parents thus accused me and my family of being behind my wife’s predicament.
“The first time I went to see her after this, her father rough-handled me and beat me up.
“Since then, they have kept my child away from me.
“I, therefore, decided to send money and other necessary things for my wife and child through my mother who ensured she paid them a visit at least thrice in a month.
“But my parents in-law were still not satisfied, “he added.
“There was a day my mother paid them a visit and an argument ensued between her and our in laws. She was hit hard on the chest by one of my wife’s siblings.
“Her sister also slapped me five times when I went there to see our son.
“I, therefore, decided to stay away from them and also told my family members to do same.
“Since she has decided to drag me to court for divorce, I accede to her suit. I have had enough of her problems, “the defendant said.
Having listened to both parties, the court president, adjourned the case till June 28 and ordered the duo to come to court with their child and parents.
