The Bauchi State Government has officially launched a mass desilting campaign across all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state as part of proactive measures to mitigate the risk of flooding during the 2025 rainy season.
The flag-off ceremony took place on Saturday around the Shifa Clinic and Gwallaga Jumaat Mosque area in Bauchi metropolis. It was led by the Commissioner for Housing and Environment, Rt. Hon. Danlami Ahmed Kawule.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner emphasized that the exercise was approved and directed by the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, in response to early warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) about potential flooding.
Ahmed Kawule stated that the initiative is a deliberate step to prevent flooding, as emphasized by the Governor. He assured that the Ministry of Housing and Environment is visiting various locations to ensure that drainages are properly cleared.

Also speaking at the event, the State Coordinator of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), Dr. Kabir Ibrahim, highlighted the continued support of the World Bank–backed project in improving environmental and water resource management across the state.
Kabir Ibrahim noted that desilting is not a one-off event, considering the nature of the environment, where runoff carries waste into the drainages. He explained that ACReSAL is intervening in the agriculture, environment, and water sectors.
The Director General of the Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA), Dr. Mahmud Bose, praised the synergy between the agency, the Ministry of Housing and Environment, and ACReSAL, noting that it has significantly enhanced the agency’s service delivery.
Mahmud Bose also urged local communities to take ownership of the campaign, stating that environmental sanitation is a collective responsibility. He encouraged all communities to actively participate in the exercise to ensure a cleaner and safer environment.
The statewide campaign includes the clearing of drainages, culverts, and waterways across both urban and rural centers, as the government intensifies efforts to prevent flooding and promote public health.
