An SS3 student of Marist Comprehensive Academy, Uturu, Abia State, was killed on Saturday, around 6.45 pm, in a robbery incident, by bandits suspected to be herdsmen.
Sources said the incident happened at a sharp bend immediately after Okigwe Prisons Authority.
The source said the bandits were trying to rob vehicles on the road when the students started running into the bush to escape and while trying to stop the escapees, the bandits started shooting and in the process killed one student, Ede Donald, of Marist Juniorate, Uturu.
Another source said two ABSU students were also involved, quoting one of them as reporting: “We ran inside the nearby bush but sustained injuries.
“We are in the hospital currently and I will be going back home so my parents can take care of me. Same with my other coursemate. She broke her bone and can’t walk.”
In a statement from the Marist Comprehensive Academy, Uturu, the school confirmed the incident, stating “Some students from, Abia State were attacked by armed bandits around Ihube road in Okigwe LGA on their way from a Final Religious Profession of some Marist Brothers.
“In the course of the robbery attack, one student in the person of Edeh Donald was shot and he later died.
“Three other students were injured. They are receiving treatment and they are responding to the treatment.
“We pray God to guide and protect Nigeria citizens”.
The Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University, ABSU Uturu Prof. Onyemachi Ogbulu however, said no ABSU student was kidnapped, adding that men of Army, DSS, police, and others were combing the area.
