Former Senate spokesperson, Senator Ajibola Basiru, on Thursday, blasted the Osun State governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, for his failure to arrest acclaimed hoodlums as claimed by his media aide, Mallam Olawale Rasheed.
Rasheed stated that he saw the hoodlums in about 3 buses at the Eid ground when he visited the place on Sallah day.
Speaking at a press conference in Osogbo, Senator Ajibola expressed disappointment, stating that the statement by Olawale Rasheed is an indictment on the governor himself. He questioned the governor’s inaction and wondered why he left the premises without arresting the thugs if their claims were true, considering he is supposed to be the Chief Security Officer of the state.
Senator Ajibola pointed out that the governor, as a sworn public servant, has a paramount responsibility for security and welfare, as stated in Section 14 of the constitution. He criticized the governor’s security team, stating that either they are inefficient or outright liars if such a situation occurred without appropriate action being taken.
The senator expressed pity for the governor, stating that he is surrounded by people who do not represent him well and are pushing illogical narratives on his behalf. Regarding the governor’s exit from the Eid ground, Senator Ajibola found it ironic that someone who is Muslim would storm out of the event and then have his spokesperson claim that he went to do thanksgivings, which is not a practice in Islam.
He emphasized the importance of demanding good governance from public officials and not being deceived by the use of religious sentiment. Senator Ajibola made it clear that he separates politics and religion and believes others should do the same, rather than pretending to be what they are not for the sake of appealing to voters.
In response, the governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, defended the competence of the governor’s handlers and praised the administration’s performance in the last seven months. He explained that an advance team had secured a space for the governor at the Eid ground, but it was hijacked by someone referred to as “SRJ” who refused to vacate the space despite being approached by protocol officers and Osogbo leaders.
Rasheed stated that the governor’s handlers were smarter and took appropriate action to prevent violence and stampede planned by “SRJ.” He claimed that armed thugs were present with the intention of causing harm, but the governor’s departure from the venue prevented the violence and protected innocent citizens. The police reportedly questioned the individual referred to as “SRJ” and an ongoing investigation is underway.
Rasheed emphasized that the administration is law-abiding and highlighted the governor’s escape from an assassination attempt and the prevention of a stampede that could have resulted in the loss of innocent lives.
