THE apex regulatory body in the nation’s advertising industry, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has said it will sanction Trophy Lager Beer and Tiwa Commercial Hub, over exposure of non-vetted materials in some states of the federation, and on the digital space without the requisite approval.
The agency, in a statement signed by its Director General, Dr. Lekan Fadolapo, to express its disapproval of the Trophy lager beer advert, stated that it decided to wield the big stick; since the said advertisements offended the sensitivities of some sections of the nation’s ethnic and religious communities.
It stated further that though it had ordered for the removal of the ‘reprehensible’ ads nationwide, it would still take all necessary and appropriate steps to ensure the violators are sanctioned in line with the nation’s relevant advertising laws.
“The said advertisements, which have offended the sensitivities of some sections of Nigeria’s ethnic and religious communities were neither submitted for vetting nor approved by the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP) for exposure.
“The advertisements are considered reprehensible and are in violation of the provisions of the ARCON Act and the Nigerian Code of Advertising,” the body stated.
On the Tiwa Commercial Hub advert, ARCON, while advising the public on the need to exercise caution, expressed concerns at the spate of unapproved investment solicitation adverts on online media platforms.
“The Tiwa Commercial Hub advert being exposed on online media platforms soliciting investment with a promise of 32% return was neither submitted for vetting, nor approved by the Advertising Standard Panel (ASP), in line with the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria Act N0 23 of 2022.
“ARCON will continue to collaborate with other law enforcement agencies to stem this tide and ensure sanity in the Nigeria Advertising industry,” it stated.
The agency however assured of its resolve to prosecute any person or body, corporate who sponsors, caused to be exposed, or exposes unapproved advertisements on any medium without the approval of the ASP in line with the Nigerian Code of Advertising.
