Executive Director, Youthcare Development and Empowerment Initiative, a Non- Governmental Organisation in the country, Dr (Mrs )Adefunke Ekine, has said that every youth in the country must be passed through vocational education that would make them useful and productive in the society.
Dr Ekine made this remark during the passing out ceremony of students who were giving intensive free training skills by the organization, held at the Social Development Centre, Samonda, Ibadan, Oyo State, recently.
According to her, the students were selected from various public secondary schools in the state for leadership training and skill development to make them better leaders in the future.
Speaking further, she said: “ Youthcare Development and Empowerment Initiative wants to make its impact on the development of Nigerian youth to be skilful, reliable and good citizens in the society, whose contributions to nation-building would be indelible. Our training focuses on the total development of a child.
“In this regard, we are seeking the state government’s assistance to collaborate with our vision to empower the youth among the secondary school students, especially the girl child.
Speaking in the same vein on the occasion, Dr Mrs Adamito Oluremi Iyun asserted that youth would need vocational guidance in their skill development process.
According to her, entrepreneurship education is essential for the growth and development of youth in society, stressing that youth should be engaged more in practically oriented vocations. She noted that in the teaching and learning process, the theory is necessary but not sufficient to build a child’s career.
Similarly, the Executive Director, Initiative For Integrated Community Welfare in Nigeria Dr Mrs Ebunlomo Walker who attended the programme, also, confirmed the relevance of youth leadership training and their skill empowerment to build future leaders for the nation. She noted that the Youthcare Initiative has commenced a laudable programme that government and the society at large should embrace for its continuity and make it accessible to all and sundry among the youth in the state.
According to her, no nation can survive its development process without responsible and trained youth in society. She suggested the establishment of functional Youth development centres in the state Where youth could acquire skills in different entrepreneurship and professional education and good leadership, adding that the future of Nigeria is dependent on creative, innovative and youth of integrity.
Mrs Abiola Badmus from the Ministry of Women Affairs, Social Welfare Development, Oyo State, who was at the occasion, described the training as a welcome development in the history of youth empowerment in the state.
While She gave kudos to the organizers for their initiatives towards empowering youth in Oyo State, Mrs Badmus enjoined all the allied Non- governmental Organisations in the state to join the state government in its bid to empower the youth in the state.
According to her, there are many idle children on the streets that would need this kind of training to become better persons in the nearest future, saying that government would need more volunteers to build this state together.
