In spite of the rancorous build-up to the Saturday local government congress of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, the exercise has been adjudged peaceful.
Checks across the state showed that the participation was appreciable as security agents were seen manning each centre where the congress was held.
In parts of Delta South and Delta Central that Tribune Online monitored, the congress was lacking in violence and usual electoral malfeasance.
Armed security men were stationed at the venues to maintain peace and order.
It was gathered that in Asaba, Ogwashi-Uku, Issele-Uku, Agbor, Owa-Oyibu, Kwale, Akwukwu-Igbo, Obiaruku, Isiokolo, all in Delta North, the exercise was conduct in the presence of agents and officials of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).
Ditto for Otu-Jeremi, Otor-Udu, Ughelli, Oleh, and Ozoro and Warri axis where party faithful were spotted as of 11:30a.m undergoing the exercise.
Publicity Secretary of APC in the state, Mr Sylvester Imonina, a lawyer, when contacted on phone, said the exercise went well and was peaceful.
He said party faithful came out in their number to elect their leaders, saying “our supporters and party faithful came out in their number because there’s need to effect the right change in the state.”
Chairman, Delta State Local Government Congress Committee, Mr Matthew Omegara, told journalists that the exercise was not only peaceful, but had a good turnout in all the local government areas he visited.
