Alleged gun-running: Osun NURTW hails Police over arrest of park manager, Alowonle

The Osun State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has commended the police for the recent arrest of Nurudeen Wakili, popularly known as Alowonle, the Chairman of the Osun State Park Management Committee.

Alowonle was apprehended on Monday for alleged possession of firearms.

In a press release signed by the Osun NURTW Chairman, Comrade Kazeem Oyewale, and made available to journalists in Osogbo on Wednesday, the union distanced itself from Alowonle, describing him as an “impostor” and a “political appointee” of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Oyewale stressed that Alowonle and his associates are not members of the NURTW, emphasizing the union’s commitment to law-abiding principles. He also pointed to the discovery of firearms in Alowonle’s possession as evidence of his alleged criminal activities.

“The arrest of Alowonle is a confirmation of our fears over the last 24 months, when the state government brought him and other criminal elements to disrupt transport activities in the state,” Oyewale stated.

The NURTW Chairman called on the police to thoroughly investigate the origin of the firearms found with Alowonle, including the service pistol reportedly linked to the police.

“Since the gun is a service pistol for the police, he must be asked where he came about it. The police must find out which officer supplied him the gun and ammunition,” Oyewale urged.

Furthermore, Oyewale appealed to security agencies to expedite investigations into the November 2022 killings of seven NURTW members in the state, allegedly involving Alowonle and other unidentified individuals.

“We also want to use this medium to appeal to the police to fish out killers of our seven members murdered in November 2022, immediately after the inauguration of Governor Ademola Adeleke. The killers of these innocent souls must face the full wrath of the law without further delay,” he said.

The NURTW reiterated its stance against criminality, emphasizing that the union does not condone illegal activities and supports the rule of law.
