Prof. Florence Banku Obi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), has announced the recipients of honorary doctorate degrees at the institution’s 37th convocation.
The honorees include Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Godswill Akpabio (D. Educ. Mgt.), H.E. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike (D. Pol. Sc.), H.E. Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu (D. Pol. Sc.), Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Moses Bisong Obi (D. Peace & Conflict Studies), Hon. Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, JSC (D. Laws), and Prince Arthur I. Eze (D. Bus. Mgt.).
The convocation activities commenced on Monday, March 17, 2025, and will culminate on Saturday, March 22, 2025, with the awarding of Ph.D. degrees, honorary doctorates (Honoris Causa), the investiture of Emeritus Professors, and the induction of graduates into the UNICAL Alumni Association. The ceremony will conclude with a thanksgiving mass at St. Paul’s Cathedral, University of Calabar, on Sunday, March 23, 2025.

Speaking on behalf of UNICAL’s management, Obi stated that approximately 13,786 students are expected to participate in the ceremony.
She provided the following breakdown: “The graduating class consists of 181 Diploma students, 11,728 First Degree graduates, 876 Master’s Degree holders, 572 Ph.D. candidates, 249 PGD students, and seven recipients of the Postdoctoral Diploma in Education.
“Further classification reveals that 66 students earned First Class, 3,143 graduated with Second Class Upper Division, 7,527 with Second Class Lower Division, 925 with Third Class, and seven with Pass degrees.”
Obi emphasized that the recipients of honorary degrees have made remarkable contributions to society, positively impacting numerous lives through their service. She added that graduates will be recognized for their academic excellence and character as they officially join the UNICAL Alumni Association.
She also highlighted several projects slated for commissioning during convocation week, including the UNICAL Hall of Fame and Multipurpose Auditorium, the College of Education Complex, a Fire Service Station with a Fire-Fighting Truck, the Pharmaceutical and Medical Pharmacy Building, and the Faculty of Pharmacy Administrative Building.
