The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has disclosed that the Agency is considering the establishment of an Aviation Safety Center (ASC) that would coordinate relevant information in the sector under one platform.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, the Commissioner of AIB, Mr Akin Olateru explained that in the time past, one needed to travel to Lagos or Abuja just to report an incident or accident in the aviation sector.
Although he said alot has improved in the aspect of incident reporting but stressed that the Aviation Safety Center is “a project that will bring together all the relevant Agencies of government and the private sector under one platform whereby when you report an accident, NCAA can see it, airlines can see it and when you release information on accident Investigation, everybody can see it.
Olateru complained that people hardly read the report of investigations released by AIB on its website, “so in the Aviation Safety Center, everything will be digitalized to make life easier and more productive for the entire nation”.
Also speaking, the General Manager on AOC and Surveillance with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Mr Godwin Balang said one reporting system platform for the aviation industry in the country was long over due.
According to him, most times the AIB gets to know about airplane accident from the social media, stating that it was wrong.
He therefore emphasized that having one reporting system would enable Agencies like the AIB have timely access to relevant information in the aviation sector.
“It is one thing to have a report and it is another thing for the report to get to the people that it concerns them. Technology today can make information dissemination easy for everyone in the industry” Balang stated.
The Aviation Safety center is to be funded by the AIB in 2022 budget.
