ACU new chancellor to invest over N1bn in school

The newly installed Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, Chief Dr Tunde Afolabi has assured the management and proprietors of the institution of his plan to invest over N1billion in the institution during his tenure.

Dr Afolabi stated this during his installation as Chancellor and 11th convocation lecture held at the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija auditorium Faculty of Law.

He was decorated by the representative of the proprietor, The Most Reverend Dr Friday John Imaekhai and the Pro chancellor and chairman of the governing council, Chief Wole Olanipekun.

Afolabi who is currently sponsoring about 125 students on full scholarship and with N20,000 monthly stipends said he is ready to invest the money in building both physical and academic infrastructure in the school under a seven-point agenda.

He said: “I have seven-point agenda as the chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University. My first agenda is that I pledge to invest over N1billion to develop both physical and welfare in this institution. My role comes with great responsibility.

“My second agenda is to cut the cost of study to the barest minimum, improve the remuneration of academic staff, particularly professors and others”, adding that he will also come up with a benchmark of remuneration of non-academic staff, upgrade of admission standard as well as foster unity among neighbouring institutions.

In the convocation lecture titled “the race of life” delivered by Chairman, Smart City Plc, Sir Demola Aladekomo, he charged the students to embrace the constant change of their generation to reinvent themselves.

“The old formula of going to school, graduating and working in one or two companies till you retire no longer applies. Your generation must embrace the constant change of this age. You will be called upon to frequently reinvent yourselves in your job roles in order to remain relevant.

“Most of you are heading out in an uncertain future. Unemployment for young people is high. But there is no unemployment for those who know how to identify and meet the needs of others either close to them or far away.”

Dignitaries on the occasion include Reverend Mrs Tola Oyediran, Assistant Inspector General of police, zone 11, Leye Oyebade, Emeritus Professor Ayo Banjo, former head of service of the federation, Professor Dapo Afolabi, among others.
