An eyewitness account had it that the incident occurred at a military check point mounted on the road when the lorry driver conveying the dead people and the animals was passed to move after being searched by the security operatives at the road block while the fuel tanker driver coming from the opposite direction lost control rammed into the lorry.
It was also gathered that the head of the fuel tanker was dismantled taking the driver into bush while the body which bumped the other trailer exploded and caught fire burning the trapped seven passengers and their animals.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Bauchi State Police Command, DSP Kamal Datti Abubakar confirmed the event to our correspondent on phone saying the tanker driver however survived during the accident ‘because the head of his vehicle was dismantled and ran into bush’.
He attributed the accident to the recklessness of the tanker driver pointing out that most accidents happening at roadblocks were due to lack of patience on the side of drivers to wait for searching.
“Roadblocks are mounted for security purposes but some drivers lack patience to wait. As a result accidents do occur from time to time,” he stated.
