6 Tips Every Novice Sports Bettor Should Know

New to sports betting? Here are the six tips for sports betting you should know before you start placing your money on bets.

Sports betting can be an exciting hobby when done right. If you are good at making predictions and choosing the right bets, and you have a little bit of luck, you can make some great money.

But, hold your horses! Before you get too excited about the adrenaline behind sports betting, let us ask you a few questions:

What do you hope to achieve through becoming someone who bets on sports? Are you in for making some money, or are you interested in having some fun?

Why you ask? Because the answers to these questions can help you determine what approach you must take when it comes to betting on sports. In other words, if you want to make money, you’ll have to take things really seriously and do a lot of studying to understand the principles and strategies of sports betting. If you are in just for having some fun, you don’t have to take things so seriously, but you should stick to betting small amounts of money.

But, right now, the only thing you must worry about as a novice, is getting the basics of sports betting right. So, here are six tips every novice sports bettor should know:

1. Learn the basics

You know what they say, “you must first learn to walk before you run.” And this is particularly essential and true in sports betting. If you are a beginner in sports betting, it would be best if you’d take some time to get familiar with the basics. Why is this essential? Because when you understand the basics of betting, you can make better-informed decisions.

What should you learn about sports betting? Well, everything from how to handicap the market, to how to practice good bankroll management, betting strategies, how to determine odds, and how to choose the sports you bet on.

There’s a plethora of information online on all these principles of betting. However, keep in mind that becoming a successful bettor takes time, patience, and a lot of trial and error. Plus, the strategies that may work for one bettor may not be effective for another. So, the best way to determine which approach works better for you is to test them all and stick with the one that helps you make the most money.

2. Make informed betting decisions

Well-informed betting decisions are half the battle.

Let’s say, for example, that you are betting on NFL football games. To make an informed betting decision, you may want to do some research first. For example, you should take a look at NFL news to learn more about team quality, team styles, motivation, and key stats and trends.

Also, if you are new to sports betting, it would be best to stick to sports that you know well. By doing so, you have higher odds of making winning betting decisions as opposed to sports you know nothing or very little about.

3. Start small

Even when you think you are familiar with the sports betting basics, remember that this activity is surrounded by uncertainty and risk. So, before you know for sure that you have picked winning strategies, you should avoid betting too much per contest when you are still learning how gamble on sports.

Making smaller but more bets is actually the best strategy for novice bettors. Why? Because you make sure that you don’t run out of money in just one bet. What’s more, remember that the longer you can stay in the game, the better your odds are for determing a winning strategy.

4. Set a strict budget

Worldwide, millions of people bet on sports. Yet, most of them lose money. Now, like it or not, the chances are that you will as well, especially as a beginner. You’ll probably become profitable one day as you gain more experience, but the chances are that you’ll probably also lose at the beginning.

So, although there’s nothing wrong with losing a couple of bucks when you are having fun in the process, this can become a real problem when you start losing too much money. Realize that this is when everything stops to be fun.

Our advice: set a strict budget and stick with it. This way, you’ll be sure that you won’t lose more than you can afford to.

5. Stick to realistic expectations

If you thought that once you start betting on sports, you can exit from your day job and make it big with being a bettor, we hate to break it to you, but the chances are pretty low that you’re going to make a living out of betting on sports.

Sports betting is fun and can bring you some nice profits. Moreover, some experienced sports bettors can make a living off of betting. Yet, there’s not a ton of them, and even these bettors lose sometimes.

So, keep your expectations realistic. If you’re in for the fun and some extra pocket money, sports betting can help you. But if you’re in to build wealth, your expectations are way off-limits.

6. Bet with a clear mind

Just like it is with traditional investing, you should never make financial decisions when you aren’t in a good mental state. In other words, you shouldn’t bet when you are stressed, upset, too excited, or, even worse, under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Since you’ll be putting your money on the table, you should only do that when your mind is in tip-top shape.

Remaining disciplined despite your mental and emotional state is perhaps the most challenging task in sports betting. We get it: it’s really easy to allow your emotions to take over. But it would be best if you avoid this at all costs.

For example, let’s say that you’re thinking about betting on your home team, even when you shouldn’t, because you are excited about the game, and you want to be supportive. Yet, if your home team has no chance of winning, you are making a bad bet based on your emotions.

So, if you want to make money with sports betting, do it in a way that makes sense from a statistical standpoint, not an emotional one. Otherwise, you are just throwing money out the window.
