A Minna Senior Magistrate Court sitting in the Angwab Daji community of Chanchaga Local Government Area of Niger State and presided over by Hafsatu Abdul Bawa Wuse has ordered the remand of a 55-year-old man in a correctional facility for allegedly having unlawful canal knowledge of a six-year-old minor.
Yau Ibrahim, of Kungu village in the Rafi local government area of the state, was arraigned in court on two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a child, sexual abuse, and exploitation.
The offence for which the defendant is standing trial is grievous in nature, thereby resulting in the accused person being remanded in a correctional facility.
According to the Police Prosecutor Inspector, Aliyu Yakubu Kuta, the offences contravened sections 26 (2) and 27 (2) of the Niger State Child Rights and Protection Law of Niger State 2021, as amended.
The Prosecutor further averred that the 55-year-old defendant, during the police investigation, allegedly confessed and admitted to having had sexual intercourse with the six-year-old child girl (names withheld), who is his granddaughter, in his room, praying the court to summarily convict the accused person.
When the charges were read to the defendant by the Presiding Senior Magistrate, Hafsat Abdul Bawa Wuse pleaded guilty to the two-count charges and pleaded for leniency.
She agreed with the submissions of the police prosecutor but adjourned the case to September 11, 2023, for the commencement of the hearing and the taking of witnesses.
