While occasional constipation is usually not serious, persistent symptoms may affect daily activities and overall well-being.

In this article, Tribune Online highlights five common causes of constipation.

Low fibre intake

One of the leading causes of constipation is a diet that lacks sufficient fibre. Fibre adds bulk to stool and allows it to move more easily through the digestive tract.

People who consume large amounts of processed foods but few fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains are more likely to experience constipation.

Not drinking enough water

Dehydration  can make stools hard, dry and difficult to pass. When the body does not receive enough fluids, the colon absorbs more water from waste materials, making bowel movements more difficult.

Drinking sufficient water throughout the day can help to keep stools softer and support normal bowel function.

Lack of physical activity

Regular movement helps to  stimulate the muscles involved in digestion. People who spend long periods sitting or living a largely inactive lifestyle may experience slower movement of stool through the intestines.

Ignoring urge to use the toilet

Delaying bowel movements repeatedly can contribute to constipation. When a person ignores the urge to pass stool, the body continues to absorb water from the stool, causing it to become harder and more difficult to pass later. Over time, this habit may disrupt normal bowel patterns and increase the likelihood of constipation.

Certain medications and medical conditions

Some medicine  can contribute to constipation as a side effect. These include certain pain medicines, antidepressants, blood pressure medications and iron supplements.

In addition, medical conditions such as diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, thyroid disorders and neurological conditions may affect bowel function and contribute to chronic constipation.
