The United Kingdom (UK)’s new visa rules are going to be fully implemented this year. This is to ensure total control over the immigration system. The changes made affect work, visitors, language requirements, and settlement. Even UK employers are not left out; they are expected to comply with new workforce planning and higher costs.
Here are the new UK visa rules you should know:
Higher English Language Standards
The United Kingdom has raised the standards for communication skills. You must have a B2 in English language, which is an “A-level standard.” This applies to first-time visa applicants and graduate visa holders who want to switch to skilled workers but excludes those who are already in the country and want to extend their visa stay.
No free visa
The UK is officially ending visa-free travel to the country on 25 February 2026. This is for visitors from 85 countries, which also includes Canada, Australia, the USA, and most European countries.
They’ve introduced “Electronic Travel Authorisation” (ETA) —which must be linked to your passport, or else, you cannot travel. Employers, too, must ensure their visitors or international clients obtain their ETA at least 3 working days before they travel. Your ETA is only valid for two years, and is 16 pounds per applicant.
Earned Settlement Framework
The standard qualifying period for settlement through a work visa has been moved up from 5 years to 10 years. This can be reduced if you’re contributing exceptionally to the UK, if your partner is British, you are employed in shortage occupations, or you are earning a high amount. If you rely on public funds or breach immigration rules, your qualifying period will be extended.
Temporary Shortage List
The TSL is a permit sponsorship for individuals who are interested in below degree level roles useful for the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy. This actually expires 31 December 2026, unless the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) proposes a continuation, the permit will no longer be available. In addition, under the new UK visa rule, you are not eligible to bring in dependents, and you do not qualify for salary discounts.
