ANOTHER young man believed to be an undergraduate of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado Ekiti, has been found hacked to death in circumstances believed to be a reprisal attack by suspected cultists.
This is just as the authorities of the institution led by Professor Sam Oye Bandele, have declared a war on cult activities in EKSU.
The student, identified as Ayodele Temilade, was found hacked to death on Monday, with students of the university claiming hinting that the young man was hacked to death on Sunday night.
According to some of the students, the corpse of the deceased was discovered at the entrance to his residence at about 10pm Sunday night and that they did not know how the corpse got there.
Photos of the victim posted on social media platforms showed that he was beheaded while the body was also inflicted with innumerable machete cuts.
On October 24, a student identified as Segun Ojo was found killed at the Osekita hostel area of the institution in what was believed to be a cult clash, and some of the students expressed fears that the matter hadn’t ended.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti police command, Mr Alberto Adeyemi, who confirmed the killing, said the command received the report of the incident on Monday and had deposited the corpse at the mortuary.
Adeyemi said “his name was given as Ayodele Temilade but we don’t know his course or level for now. We are treating the issue as a murder case until the investigation is completed.”
The acting Director, Information and Corporate Affairs of EKSU, Ajibade Olubunmi, who also confirmed the development, announced that the institution had declared war on cultism in EKSU.
According to Ajibade, the war tagged “Operation no cultism in EKSU”, was declared by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel Oye Bandele, pointing out that he made the declaration after an emergency security meeting in response to the noticeable upsurge in cultists’ activities in the institution.
“All suspected cultists will be rounded up, investigated and dealt with according to the University’s extant rules and regulations as well as prosecuted in the law courts,” he said.
Professor Bandele, he added, further directed that names of suspected cultists in the University would be compiled for necessary action.
He said the Vice Chancellor “vowed to leave no stone unturned until all the unscrupulous elements are chased out of EKSU”, adding that “the University would no longer be home to cultists and nefarious activities by any group.”
Professor Bandele noted that efforts were on to involve indigenes of Iworoko and adjoining communities in the operation to flush out suspected cultists from their hideouts.
The Vice-Chancellor assured that adequate security would be provided on campus for all staff and students on campus.
