Depression is a common mental health condition and mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest in things as well as activities you once enjoyed; it causes a persistent feeling of sadness and changes in how you think, sleep, eat, and act.

Depression is not just about feeling sad; it’s a condition that cuts across cultures, lifestyles, and economic classes. Some nations have better awareness and access to treatment, while others are still trying to catch up.

In this article, Tribune Online brings for you top countries with the highest rates of depression, according to recent global data from World of Statistics.

1. Greenland – 6.61%

Greenland sits at the top of the list of countries with the highest rate of depression, and for no good reason. Long, dark winters, isolation, and limited access to healthcare services have fueled high depression rates. The country’s small population also magnifies the impact, making mental health a pressing challenge.

2. Greece – 6.52%

Greece still feels the ripple effects of its financial crisis. Unemployment, poverty, and uncertainty have left many struggling. Although the country has made progress in addressing mental health, stigma and limited resources remain stumbling blocks.

3. Spain – 6.04%

Spain is often associated with sunshine and lively culture, but the reality isn’t so simple. High youth unemployment, economic pressures, and lifestyle stress have driven up depression levels. The pandemic years added fuel to an already rising concern.

4. Portugal – 5.88%

Portugal mirrors many of Spain and Greece’s struggles. High rates of alcohol use and financial strain have made depression a widespread issue. Mental health services are expanding, but accessibility still varies depending on location.

5. Palestine – 5.75%

Living under conflict and political instability takes a heavy toll. Palestinians face daily uncertainty, economic hardship, and trauma that naturally contribute to high depression rates. For many, access to proper care is extremely limited.

6. Belarus – 5.6%

In Belarus, social and political pressures are tightly interwoven with mental health issues. Depression often goes untreated because of stigma and lack of accessible services, leaving many to silently struggle.

7. Bahrain – 5.52%

Despite being one of the wealthier Gulf countries, Bahrain isn’t immune: it is among the top countries with the highest rate of depression. Social pressures, lifestyle stress, and growing awareness of mental health issues have revealed just how common depression is, even in nations with strong economies.

8. Morocco – 5.49%

In Morocco, depression is influenced by poverty, lack of mental health infrastructure, and cultural barriers to seeking treatment. Rural communities are hit especially hard, where access to psychiatrists or therapists is scarce.

9. Iran – 5.48%

Iran’s challenges stem from economic sanctions, political pressures, and social restrictions. These factors, combined with a shortage of mental health professionals, push depression rates higher than many might expect.

10. Lithuania – 5.42%

Lithuania closes out the top 10 list. Despite improvements in healthcare access, high suicide rates and social isolation highlight the severity of depression in the Baltic region. The government has increased its focus on mental health, but stigma remains a stubborn obstacle.

Depression doesn’t discriminate, despite being the top countries with the highest rate of depression. Whether it’s the stress of the long dark winters in Greenland, financial struggles in Greece, each country faces its own set of challenges. What’s clear is that awareness, access to treatment, and breaking down stigma are crucial in turning the tide.
