At least 10 maritime travellers are feared to have been abducted by sea pirates along the Bonny–Port Harcourt waterway.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, has raised concerns about the safety of travellers on this critical route.
While details remain sketchy, Channels Television reported that the kidnapping involved 10 individuals travelling between Bonny and Port Harcourt.
Confirming the incident in a telephone interview, Israel Pepple, the District Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Rivers State District, stated: “It’s not a rumour; it is real.
“Ten persons have been kidnapped this morning coming from Bonny to Port Harcourt. We’ve reported to the security agencies.”
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, when contacted, promised to provide further details as he had yet to be fully briefed on the situation.
