The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has disclosed that 1.4 million traumatised children living in Boko Haram conflict-prone areas have received psychosocial support in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.
The UNICEF Country Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, stated this in Maiduguri on Friday during a press briefing in commemoration of this year’s World Humanitarian Day coming up tomorrow, August 19, 2023.
She noted that, currently, 2 million people are internally displaced in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.
According to her, UN partners and NGOs are supporting the government in meeting the ever-growing needs of internally displaced persons, but she added that a lot more needs to be done.
“There has been progress since I last visited here. Children are getting vaccinated, they are returning to school, mothers continue to visit primary health facilities, and they are getting registered at birth”.
“I am always impressed by the resilience of the people of Borno State, despite the numerous challenges they face every day of their lives”.
“I met with the governor of Borno, H.E. Zulum, and appraised him on the excellent collaboration between his government and UNICEF in health, nutrition, protection, WASH, and social protection of children in Borno State.”.
“I also had the opportunity to visit Ngala and saw firsthand how UN partners and NGOs are supporting the government in meeting the ever-growing needs of internally displaced persons,” Munduate said.
She explained that UNICEF is the leading humanitarian agency, delivering results for some of the most disadvantaged children around the world.
She also applauded all humanitarian workers who have stood firm despite all adversity to serve the people of Borno State, saying “Their courage and determination are remarkable”.
