Any country that will be outstanding in the world must acknowledge the role of youths in all aspects simply because youths are the strong pillars that uphold nations.
It is a pity that many youths in Nigeria are yet to get their bearings right because of the syndrome of unemployment and poor educational background, among other factors.
Some of the youths who are highly educated have been turned into fraudsters popularly known as “Yahoo guys” as a result of massive unemployment in the country, though greed and laziness are also issues responsible for this.
The fact remains that the population of youths is more than that of adults in this nation according to the record of the National Population Commission. If these youths could be given a chance to work in tandem with people in government, many things would have greatly improved in the country.
The irony of the matter is that some of the adults who should have been disengaged from the civil service are deliberately falsifying their ages so as to remain longer in the office and that is why some of them are currently feeding their grandchildren when the parents of those children are jobless.
A nation that intends to develop should empower its youths educationally, technologically and financially. The fact remains that many youths are naturally endowed by God to contribute their quota to the development of a nation but our youths are completely neglected by the people in authority.
China as a nation is advancing in technology on a daily basis because the government has given the youths an independent platform to operate and demonstrate their dexterity. Research has shown that most of the handsets that we are using in Nigeria were invented by Chinese young school leavers.
A graduate of Electrical/Electronic Engineering in Nigeria cannot repair an ordinary transistor radio, let alone manufacture any part of phone cell. It is apparent that the youths in China are contributing immensely to the advancement and economic growth of their country.
Nigeria is indebted to the foreign countries at present because the youths are contributing practically nothing to the development of the nation. The natural resources that should generate income for the nation are not properly managed by our tyrannical leaders.
The only visible sector in which the youths are functioning averagely is in sports. Despite the fact that some youths who are deeply involved in sports are not well motivated, they are still doing their best for the nation.
The truth and incontrovertible fact is that if Nigeria is going to develop, the youths should be given priority attention so as to demonstrate their prowess to make Nigeria great. Failure to adopt this policy in favour of the youths will lead to all manner of social vices across the states of the federation.
Oladimeji Micheal Olalekan,
Oyo State.
