As part of its efforts to promote academic excellence, Yejide Girls’ Grammer School (SNR), Molete, Ibadan, Oyo State held its prize-giving/award ceremony with outstanding students being acknowledged and rewarded.
In her opening speech, the senior school principal, Mrs Oyedoyin Alabi, explained that the programme has not been organised in the school for many years and the purpose is to reward hard work and excellence.
“These days, students are no longer willing to study hard, all they pursue is the easy way to academic success, unlike it was in the past when success was achieved through hard work and rugged determination.
“This prize giving day programme is being resuscitated with the aim of reviving the spirit of hard work in our students; a revival which we believe would launch them into a successful future with meaningful and outstanding result,” she said.
Speaking on the theme of the day, ‘Academic Excellence: Focus of Every Student’, the guest speaker, Prof Adetayo Oyebola, said: “Attaining academic excellence is not a one day task; it takes time, patience consistent practice to attain the desired level of required intellect.”
“To achieve academic excellence, you must have hunger for knowledge, have faith in yourself, be disciplined, have a serious study habit and place value on yourself.”
The chairperson of the event, Mrs Adenike Anulopo, advised the students to be focused, have an aim in life and strive to achieve it.
The National Secretary of YOGA, Dr Jane Adebusuyi, who spoke on why the association is involved in the prize giving programme, said: “The old girls association has always been very supportive to the school because we believe that we should be able to give back to the school that was our foundation for whatever each of us has been able to achieve and also be a motivation to the students who are still in school.
In an interview, the winner of the Olukemi Sarumi prize for best SS3 student in English Language, Eniola Modinat, said: “I feel really glad and happy to have gotten this. I want to thank the organisers, my teachers, my parents and my peers.”
Other prizes were awarded to best students in Arts, Science, and Commercial, best behaved, neatest students, best in individual subjects, to encourage and reward excellence in academics and conduct among students.
