No fewer than 150 youth volunteers under the aegis of Plogging Nigeria at Kaduna State University (KASU) participated in a cleanup of Kaduna City in the early hours of Saturday to celebrate World Cleanup Day.
As early as 7 a.m., volunteers from all over the Kaduna metropolis, comprising students, journalists, and environmentalists, convened at the Station Market to embark on the cleanup, which has been observed in other cities across the country.
The volunteers started the cleanup from the Station Market in Kaduna South Local Government Area and concluded their efforts in the afternoon at the Katsina Road roundabout in Kaduna North Local Government Area—a 10 km journey during which they collected dirt and waste dumped on the streets.
Holding placards with various inscriptions such as “Dirty hands, clean cities,” “Pick that trash,” and “Let the earth breathe, don’t suffocate it,” the volunteers appealed to citizens about the need to keep the environment clean.
Speaking at the end of the cleanup, the coordinator of the program (World Cleanup Day in Kaduna), Habiba Suleiman, remarked that this day is set aside annually to create awareness on how to maintain clean cities.
“Every September 20, World Cleanup Day is celebrated all over the world. In Kaduna, we are celebrating today in partnership with UNICEF. The idea is to clean up the city and ensure the environment is tidy,” she explained.
According to her, “150 volunteers participated in World Cleanup Day today (Saturday) in Kaduna, with participants drawn from various tertiary institutions, especially Kaduna University and Kaduna Polytechnic, as well as environmentalists, journalists, and partners.”
She stressed the importance of keeping the environment clean, stating that a clean environment helps minimise illness.
She also added, “Wherever you are—at home, in the office, or in shops—always keep it clean by disposing of waste in a dustbin instead of throwing it on the ground and making the environment look dirty.”
