As part of efforts to bring an end to maternal mortality and improve general healthcare for women and children in military host communities, a modern and state-of-the-art facility has been inaugurated by the wife of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Oghogho Chris Musa, at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna.
Speaking during the inauguration of the facility in Kaduna on Tuesday, the wife of the CDS, who doubles as the President of the Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), said that as part of their civil-military engagement, they have provided healthcare facilities for the military and their host communities.
Musa noted that the decision to establish the healthcare facility was informed by the revelation of the World Health Organisation (WHO), which said that every two minutes, a woman dies as a result of pregnancy, surely due to inadequate care.
Also speaking, the commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Major General John Ochai, said the facility is equipped with the most modern healthcare facilities with regards to maternity services, which will help improve the lives of women and children in its host community.
The former president of the association, Vickie Erabo, for whom the hospital was named, expressed her gratitude for the gesture, promising to continue to support the association and the government of Nigeria for national security and development.
The Executive Chairman of the Internal Revenue Service Kaduna State, Comrade Jerry Adams, and the Executive Secretary of the Primary Health Care Service Board Kaduna State, Dr Jamo Yusuf, both were at the inaugural ceremony of the Maternity Hospital at the Nigerian Defence Academy NDA Kaduna, said in their separate remarks that Kaduna State will continue to collaborate with the hospital to improve healthcare services in the state.
The two government officials said the event marked a significant milestone in healthcare delivery as the establishment of the health facility will go a long way in tackling healthcare challenges in the military barracks, their host community, and Kaduna State.
He appraised the performance and contribution of the wife of the former Chief of Defence Staff, Vickie Erabo, and the wife of the current CDS, Oghogho Musa, for the actualization of the maternity hospital, saying that this is in line with Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani’s resolve to provide quality healthcare services in the state
