In the bustling nation of Nigeria, where the pursuit of education is fervent and the job market is highly competitive, the importance of acquiring skills while in school cannot be overstated. Beyond the confines of textbooks and four walls of classroom, the Nigerian youths are discovering the immense value of honing practical skills that complement their academic pursuits. In this opinion piece, I decided to delve into the compelling reasons every student must learn a skill before graduating — as a strategic move that can shape the future of the Nigerian workforce.

One of the most compelling reasons for learning a skill while in school is the unparalleled competitive advantage it provides. With a myriad of graduates vying for limited job opportunities, a candidate who possesses both academic qualifications and hands-on skills stands head and shoulders above the rest. This edge not only captures the attention of potential employers but also demonstrates a proactive attitude toward personal growth and professional development.

Nigeria’s entrepreneurial spirit is undeniable, with countless individuals aspiring to establish their businesses. Acquiring a skill while pursuing formal education equips these aspiring entrepreneurs with the tools they need to turn their visions into reality. Whether it’s mastering digital marketing strategies or perfecting culinary techniques, these skills form the backbone of successful startups that contribute to Nigeria’s economic landscape.

In a nation marked by economic uncertainties, the ability to diversify one’s income cannot be overlooked. The Nigerian job market can be unpredictable, with downturns affecting various sectors. A skill acquired during school years can serve as your safety net, offering an alternative income source during lean times. This financial resilience empowers individuals to weather economic storms and maintain a stable livelihood.

The practical application of skills acquired outside the classroom is a remarkable boon. Often, the gap between theory and practice is bridged by hands-on skill acquisition. Whether it’s engineering students building prototypes or art enthusiasts refining their craft, these experiences enrich their academic pursuits. The fusion of theoretical knowledge with practical expertise creates graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also proficient in real-world scenarios.

Networking is another invaluable facet of skill acquisition during schooling. Engaging in skill-building activities introduces individuals to peers who share similar aspirations and professionals who have mastered the craft. These connections burgeon into a network that fosters collaboration, mentorship, and exposure to emerging opportunities. In Nigeria’s interconnected job market, these networks are bridges to career advancement and personal growth.

As industries evolve and technological advancements reshape the professional landscape, adaptability becomes a prized trait. Skill acquisition during schooling fosters a mindset of agility and versatility. Graduates are prepared to navigate shifting tides, embracing change and emerging as sought-after assets in a dynamic job market. This adaptability is essential in a nation like Nigeria, where industries undergo rapid transformations.

Furthermore, the personal growth and confidence that arise from skill acquisition are invaluable. The journey of learning a new skill demands determination, patience, and overcoming challenges. As individuals surmount obstacles and master their chosen skills, a newfound self-assuredness emerges. This confidence extends beyond the skill itself, permeating other aspects of life and empowering individuals to face challenges head-on.

Lastly, the global perspective gained through skill acquisition is a pivotal asset. Many skills are universally relevant, transcending geographical boundaries. By acquiring such skills, Nigerian students open doors to international collaborations, remote work opportunities, and cross-cultural experiences. This global outlook broadens their horizons, fostering a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives.

In conclusion, Nigerian youth are awakening to the transformative power of acquiring skills while pursuing formal education. From gaining a competitive edge and fostering entrepreneurship to building financial resilience and enhancing personal growth, the benefits are vast. In a nation where the job market is fierce and adaptability is essential, these skills form a solid foundation for success. As Nigeria forges ahead into an increasingly dynamic future, the youth armed with education and skills are poised to lead the charge toward progress.
