A woman’s fertile period is generally defined as the six-day period that includes five days leading up to ovulation—when a mature egg is released from one of your ovaries and travels down one of your fallopian tubes—and the day after ovulation. This calculation is based on the understanding that sperm can survive for up to five days in a woman’s reproductive tract and an egg can be fertilized for 12 to 24 hours after it’s released. A woman with a regular menstrual period can estimate her ovulation period as the tenth to fifteen day after the onset of her menses. Women with irregular periods can determine their ovulation periods either through the use of an ovulation predictor kit or track their ovulation symptoms, such as changes in their basal body temperature and cervical mucus.
