A fresh wave of controversy has hit the political scene as former US President, Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton, have been subpoenaed to testify about their connections to the late financier and convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.
Clinton would become only the fifth former US president to testify before a congressional committee if he appears on October 14, the scheduled date for his deposition.
Flight records reveal that Clinton flew aboard Epstein’s private jet at least 26 times, with destinations including the Virgin Islands, Portugal, Siberia, Japan, and China.
The specific reasons for these trips remain undisclosed.
The subpoenas were issued on Tuesday by House Republicans to nearly a dozen high-profile figures, including the Clintons.
Newly surfaced photos show Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell at the White House in 1993, during Bill Clinton’s presidency.
President Clinton and Hillary Clinton, who served as Secretary of State under Barack Obama, have been summoned to appear before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
In the subpoena letters, committee chairman James Comer wrote that “the facts and circumstances surrounding both Mr. Epstein and Ms. (Ghislaine) Maxwell’s cases have received immense public interest and scrutiny.”
He added, “While the Department undertakes efforts to uncover and publicly disclose additional information related to Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell’s cases, it is imperative that Congress conduct oversight of the federal government’s enforcement of sex trafficking laws generally and specifically its handling of the investigation and prosecution of Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell.
Clinton and Epstein’s History
While Clinton and Epstein shared a known social history, no evidence has been publicly released linking the former president to criminal activity. Still, their association remains a topic of public interest.
In 1999, Epstein donated $20,000 to Hillary Clinton’s Democratic fundraising efforts.
A particularly bizarre detail emerged in 2019: in Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse, authorities discovered an oil painting depicting Bill Clinton wearing a blue dress and red heels while seated in the Oval Office.
Clinton’s spokesperson, Angel Ureña, clarified that the former president had just “one brief visit” to Epstein’s apartment in 2002 and stated, “President Clinton knows nothing about the terrible crimes Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty to in Florida some years ago or those with which he has been recently charged in New York.”
Former President Donald Trump, speaking to the press on July 25, deflected questions about Epstein by saying, “You should focus on Clinton.”
The Trump administration’s Justice Department and FBI later stated that no incriminating Epstein client list exists, contradicting earlier suggestions that such documents would be released.
Notably, Trump and his children were also passengers on Epstein’s jet during a 1990s trip to Washington, D.C. Trump has denied any involvement in Epstein’s crimes.
