Veritas University, Bwari-Abuja, has emerged as the overall best in Africa in the just concluded African Telecommunication Union (ATU)-organised Innovation Challenge held in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Rev. Fr. Professor Hyacinth Ichoku, who made this known while briefing newsmen at the university campus in Abuja, noted that the students from the university had put up a superlative performance to emerge as the overall winner of the competition.
Ichoku, at the event, also supported a call by the same stakeholders for the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to extend intervention to private universities, arguing that the children being trained in private universities are Nigerian children.
According to him, the team from the university emerged victorious at the prestigious ATU Innovation Challenge, beating entries from 26 other universities in Africa.
“I am delighted to share with you all that our talented students, led by their equally gifted Head of Department, Dr. Emmanuel Mkpjiogu, and his team, emerged victorious at the prestigious ATU Innovation Challenge, beating entries from 26 other universities in Africa.
“This achievement not only reflects the calibre of students we nurture at Veritas University but also highlights our dedication to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among our students.
“We are immensely proud of our student’s accomplishments and view them as a testament to the holistic education, discipline, and support system we provide at Veritas University,” he stated.
Ichoku also points out that beyond the academic sphere, Veritas University won the All Nigerian Universities Debating Championship in April 2022 and went on to win the Pan-African University Debating Championship held in Nairobi, Kenya, in December 2022.
He added that this feat has qualified the university to represent Africa in the International Debating Contest in the United States of America in March 2024.
The Vice-Chancellor also expressed delight that the African Development Bank, based in Ivory Coast, has adopted Veritas University as the Centre of Excellence for Computer Coding for Employment in Nigeria.
He said, “For us, this is important because of our greater vision at Veritas University, where we are committed to not only academic excellence but to the holistic development of the students that have been entrusted into our care.
“We take this responsibility extremely seriously. Since our relocation to Abuja in 2014, Veritas University has made significant strides in various aspects of academic excellence and institutional development.
“Our commitment to providing quality education and moulding the holistic personality has been unwavering, leading to numerous accomplishments that have shaped the university’s reputation both nationally and internationally.
He, however, lamented that, like most institutions in the country, Veritas University is negatively affected by the economic challenge in the country, saying it faces financial constraints that limit its ability to invest in critical areas such as infrastructure upgrades, faculty development, and student scholarships.
