The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has launched its two-year $9.5 million advancing nutrition activity to improve the nutritional health of citizens in Bauchi, Kebbi, and Sokoto States.
The activity will address the immediate and underlying causes of malnutrition, provide technical support, share innovations, and conduct research to improve nutritional outcomes.
The launch was also an opportunity to showcase the USAID/Nigeria Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Strategy (2020-2025), which was developed in partnership with the Government of Nigeria and other key stakeholders.
In his remarks, USAID Health, Population, and Nutrition Office Director, Paul McDermott said, “Malnutrition has a far-reaching impact on the most vulnerable populations, especially children, adolescents, and women.”
He added, “Addressing malnutrition is critical to improving health, education, and economic development.”
According to a 2021 UNICEF report, malnutrition is the underlying cause of nearly half of the deaths of children under age five every year in Nigeria.
The activity is led by John Snow, Inc. and JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. and a diverse group of experienced partners, including Helen Keller International.
Similarly, a statement signed by the Communication Officer of Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, Yetunde Olarewaju said, “Every year, too many children and adults become ill and even die because of unsafe food.”
She further said that improving food safety is a global challenge, and every day innovative solutions are being developed to make food safer around the world.
However, she added not enough of these innovations have been applied in traditional food markets, and further up the food chain, in Nigeria.
“EatSafe, a program funded by USAID, is launched a national Innovation Challenge in Nigeria today, 04 April 2022.”
“The challenge calls on all students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and innovators, passionate about food safety and/or nutrition, to share their ideas on how existing food safety innovations can be adapted and applied in traditional markets and further up the food chain.”
“The EatSafe Innovation Challenge is an activity led by the EatSafe Consortium, which includes the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Pierce Mill Entertainment and Education, and Busara Center for Behavioral Economics. It is supported by Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network (SBN) and the IFSS portal.”
