For many Nigerians planning to relocate to the United Kingdom, the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) has become one of the most expensive parts of the visa process.

Unlike many other healthcare systems where insurance is paid monthly, the UK requires most visa applicants to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge in full before their visa application is processed.

For families applying together, this can amount to several thousand pounds, even before visa fees, flight tickets and accommodation are considered. As a result, some families have reported delaying their travel plans, using savings or borrowing money to meet the upfront cost of the application.

In this article, Tribune Online explains why the UK health surcharge has become a financial challenge for many diaspora families.

Surcharge is charged for every family member

One of the biggest reasons the cost becomes so high is that the Immigration Health Surcharge is paid separately for each  eligible applicant. A family of four does not pay one health surcharge. Instead, each adult and child covered by the visa application is required to pay the applicable fee. The larger the family, the higher the total amount due before the application can proceed.

Entire amount must be paid before the visa is processed

Unlike a monthly insurance payment, the Immigration Health Surcharge is generally collected upfront . Applicants must pay for the entire period covered by their visa application before it can be submitted. This means a family applying for a multi-year visa may need to raise thousands of pounds at once. For households already budgeting for relocation, finding such a large amount within a short period can be difficult.

Surcharge comes in addition to other visa expenses

The Immigration Health Surcharge is only one part of the total relocation cost. Families are also expected to pay visa application fees, biometric  enrollment charges, English language test fees where required, document processing costs and travel expenses.

When these costs are combined, the financial commitment can become significant, particularly for applicants moving with spouses and children.

Many families have to review their finances carefully

Because the payment is required before a visa decision is made, applicants often need to plan their finances well in advance.

Some rely on personal savings, while others may seek financial assistance from relatives or other lawful sources to meet the upfront costs. Careful budgeting has become an important part of the relocation process.
