U.S. partners Nigeria on deployment of police to North-East

The U.S. on Monday said it would partner with the Federal Government of Nigeria to support efforts to deploy additional police and civilian security to the North-East.

Ms Rosalyn Wiese, Director, U.S. International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) Nigeria, disclosed this at the graduation ceremony for 26 officers of the Nigerian Police Force in advanced human rights training in Abuja.

The training was organised by the U.S. Embassy in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force.

Wiese said that the week-long training was to provide advanced human rights training to officers of the Nigeria Police Force to be deployed to the North-East.

She said the training was important for all security forces when providing security to vulnerable populations.

She urged the management of the police to continue to provide officers with the opportunity to acquire skills that would make them more effective and professional.

The director said that the training curriculum was developed based on the present environment in the North-East.

Earlier, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Training, Mr Emmanuel Inyang, said the training had proffered workable solutions and guiding template to the police on restoration of civil authority in the North-East.

Inyang, who was represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Training, Mr Sani Mohammed, said the training had offered the participants the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills to effectively discharge their duties.

He urged the participants to utilise the knowledge acquired as they progressed in their career.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, CSP Odudu Modebe said the training would enhance their capacity to promote, preserve and protect human rights in the course of their duty.

He suggested a practical exposure of participants abroad to gain international exposure.

Modebe also suggested that practical field sessions should be included in the curriculum and the course duration be expanded as a week was too short to acquire meaningful learning.

Modebe also called for the sustenance of the programme by government to enable participants to become experts in the subject matter.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that INL programme provides equipment, training, mentoring and capacity building support to law enforcement agencies and the justice sector institutions.

NAN also reports that participants who came from various police formations would replicate the training in their commands and formations.
