ENJOY the best world with tuwo and gbegiri this weekend. Tuwo is a Northern Nigerian meal which is best enjoyed with gbegiri soup. These days, it is not only the Northerners’ favorite but of people down South too. One interesting thing about the preparation of this meal is that it is easy and stress free. However, there are two types of tuwo namely tuwo shinkafa and tuwo masara.
Tuwo shinkafa is made from rice while tuwo masara is made from ground maize. But our choice today is the one made from grounded rice. When eating with gbegiri, a Yoruba soup, you will always ask for more.
Let’s get started on how to prepare tuwo shinkafa and gbegiri soup.
Ingredients for Tuwo
Tuwo rice
Beans
Rodo
Onions
Meat
Cray fish/smoked fish (optional)
Palm-oil
Seasoning cube
Tuwo preparation
- Soak and peel your beans.
- Add the peeled beans into a pot, then add water and cook until very soft. Top up the water from time to time but make sure the water is on the same level with the beans. This ensures you have the right amount of water in the soup.
- Mash the beans till very smooth. To ensure you get a smooth paste, sieve out the chaff.
- Blend your pepper alongside the onions.
- Heat the blended pepper with palm oil
- Put the mashed beans back on fire and add the heated palm oil sauce to it.
- Add your seasoning cube, salt, already boiled meat, smoked fish, cray fish and cook until it turns yellowish. Then, your gbegiri is ready.
How to prepare Gbegiri
- Wash and boil the rice without adding salt.
- Add water intermittently until it is softer than normal rice.
- Pound and mix up the rice with a wooden spatula until it sticks together.
Serve with your gbegiri soup and enjoy the best meal you can ever have.
