A resurfaced video of Senate President Godswill Akpabio has sparked outrage online after commenting on the economic hardship in the country.
In the viral video, Akpabio was seen advising his fellow distinguished colleagues to help themselves to free food wherever they find it, amid Nigeria’s economic hardship.
“Yes, there would be a dinner for the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President at 7:30pm today. The venue would be at Chopsticks, Mississippi Ministers in Maitama. This announcement is from distinguish Senator Dan Dutse Muhammed.
“Apparently, it’s not being funded by the governor, neither is it being funded by the National Assembly, and it’s his initiative. So, I urge members that times are difficult and wherever you see free food, endeavour to avail yourself. Thank you Distinguish Senator DanDutse,” Akpabio was quoted in the viral video.
Akpabio’s statement on free food was met with laughter from colleagues, but many Nigerians are unhappy, feeling he’s out of touch with their current struggles.
Critics took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their disappointment.Â
@shanwatche said, “These guys are not aware of the plight of the citizens. This is sad. You impoverished the people and admonished them to become beggars?”Â
Others, like @ManOfNumvers_, pointed out that “They are causing them hardship and making fun of them at the same time. And Nigerians are keeping quiet.”
