AGAINST the backdrop of travel alerts issued by some foreign diplomatic institutions to their citizens about the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, the FCT security committee has banned the use of fireworks in the capital this festive season.

This was as it placed security operatives on heightened alert, to combat crimes and ensure effective surveillance in the territory.

The committee also announced that the police and other security outfits had stepped up patrol of reported flashpoints of crime as well as enhanced surveillance on supermarkets, malls and gardens, among others.

These were parts of the resolutions of the committee, after its emergency security review session, especially during the festive seasons, in Abuja.

The meeting was convened by the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, who was represented at the meeting by the FCT permanent secretary, Mr Chinyeaka Ohaa.

The minister reiterated that the ban on the use of fireworks in the territory was still in force and cautioned against the use of fireworks this season.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has, however, assured members of the public, including foreign nationals, of adequate security.

This was contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer(FPRO), Jimoh? Moshood.

The FPRO said the police boss had placed all the police formations nationwide on the red alert, to confront any eventuality.
