In a groundbreaking move, President Bola Tinubu has made history by adding a firefighting truck to his presidential convoy, marking the first time such a vehicle has been included in the Nigerian presidency.
This announcement was made by the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Engr. Abdulganiyu Jaji, during a visit from Dr Oluwatoyin Akinlade, the new Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior.
As part of their efforts to enhance firefighting capabilities, Jaji disclosed that the Federal Fire Service has recently procured 15 rapid firefighting mini trucks. These smaller vehicles are specifically designed to navigate crowded terrains that were previously inaccessible to larger firefighting appliances.
Jaji expressed his satisfaction with the progress made by the service, stating, “We recently completed and commissioned the first Fire House props in West Africa, located inside the National Fire Academy in Sheda.” He further mentioned that the Service has acquired 15 Ford Built Rapid Intervention Vehicles, which have already been delivered and are awaiting commissioning and deployment.
In a significant development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu granted approval for the inclusion of the Service’s Rapid Intervention Vehicle in his motorcade. This unprecedented decision sets a new precedent in the history of Nigeria. Additionally, the Federal Fire Service has taken the initiative to celebrate International Firefighter’s Day, further highlighting their commitment to raising awareness about the vital work carried out by firefighters.
Moreover, the Service has received approval for a large expanse of land in Sauka, Abuja, FCT, where the construction of the Service’s National Headquarters will take place. This allocation demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing the necessary infrastructure for the effective functioning of the Fire Service.
Despite these achievements, Jaji acknowledged the challenges faced by the agency, including inadequate manpower, attacks on firefighters, housing needs for personnel, firefighting infrastructural gaps, and budgetary constraints. However, with these recent advancements and ongoing efforts, the Federal Fire Service is poised to overcome these obstacles and continue serving the nation with dedication and professionalism.
