Entrepreneurship is about undertaking responsibility. The vision of labour and division of labour are proxies for possibilities and responsibilities. Entrepreneurship is a function of the entrepreneur. The vision of possibilities and division of responsibilities are determined by the entrepreneur who is a leader in his/her own right. What vision is to leadership is what innovation is to entrepreneurship. Everything rises and falls on vision and innovation, that is, everything rises and falls on entrepreneurial leadership. Innovation is the driver of possibilities. Knowledge and creativity drive innovation. Innovation is the ability to apply creative solutions to problems and to opportunities to enhance and to enrich people’s lives. Vision on the other hand is the driver of responsibilities. Leadership is the driver of vision. It is the ability to set goals and create rules. It is the capacity to follow through to see that goals are accomplished and rules are followed.
The vision of entrepreneurship is the vision of the entrepreneur which includes division of labour. An entrepreneur is a leader who sees possibilities and sets goals. Entrepreneurs are trained to see and seize entrepreneurial opportunities. Aspiring entrepreneurs should know that without a vision, an innovation will suffer a limitation. When vision is short-sleeved, innovation will be short-lived.
The vision of labour is the vision of possibilities and responsibilities. Entrepreneurship rises and falls on vision and innovation which serve as the structure and function of any entrepreneurial endeavour, respectively.
In biology, the principle that structure determines function is fundamental. This means that the way a biological entity is arranged allows it to perform its specific role effectively. For example, the structure of proteins, cells, and organs is intricately linked to their functions within an organism.
Entrepreneurship is a function of the entrepreneur. The entrepreneur is primarily supposed to be a carrier of vision before choosing a career in innovation. The entrepreneur by virtue of vision is able to lay a solid entrepreneurial foundation or structure which sustains innovation and business operations. The vision of labour determines division of labour. An entrepreneurial structure is a function of the entrepreneur’s vision. Structure determines function here, connotes that vision determines business operations.
Â
Division of labour
The vision of labour determines division of labour. In a more specific term, what an entrepreneur is starting determines the roles and responsibilities of his/her team members. What are you starting? When I began to transit from being an entrepreneur to becoming an entrepreneurial leader in my own right, I began to understand that indeed, structure determines function. My vision of possibilities had by default, created a vision of responsibilities for the would-be workers. Everything rises and falls on the vision of labour. Division of labour rises and falls on the vision of labour. Business growth and expansion rise and fall on the vision of possibilities.
Â
Vision is elastic
The elasticity of vision means that vision can be stretched as the entrepreneur grows in knowledge and leadership. Remember, entrepreneurship is a function of the entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship is about the division of labour and division of labour. The former is about possibilities, while the latter is abour responsibilities. The entrepreneur determines both. Possibilities are responsibilities. The vision of labour is division of labour. An elastic vision gives room for unprecedented possibilities and responsibilities as the entrepreneur grows. Growth is the mother of vision. Entrepreneurial growth is the mother of possibilities and responsibilities.
The vision of labour is the knowledge of what your work is about as an entrepreneur. Whether you are a social entrepreneur or a business entrepreneur, you need to understand your ministry/industry as the case may be and grow in vision – possibilities and responsibilities.
Â
Deepen your vision
Your ministry/vision is at the mercy of your vision. The mindset of an entrepreneur has a big influence on his/her vision. Think like an entrepreneur—an entrepreneur believes impossibility is dead. Also think like a leader—a leader believes responsibility is to be alive to opportunities.
Entrepreneurs miss opportunities sometimes not because they didn’t prepare for possibilities, they miss opportunities because they didn’t prepare for responsibilities. To deepen a vision is not only to be productive, it also means to be proactive by creating structures for potential functions. Remember, structure determines functions. Entrepreneurs are productive, while leaders are proactive. Entrepreneurial leaders are both productive and proactive. They are quick to spot opportunities and take responsibilities to take advantage of opportunities by putting up an entrepreneurial structure.
Â
Entrepreneurial structure
One of the major tasks in entrepreneurship is the ability to envision possibilities. Again, possibilities are responsibilities. An administrative structure is essential for entrepreneurial functions. Administrative responsibilities are needed for a sustainable entrepreneurial practice.
An administrative organizational structure determines how the roles, power, and responsibilities are assigned, and how the work process flows among different management levels.
Structure determines function. The administrative capacity of an organisation determines division of labour among the individuals working for it. The vision of labour determines both the entrepreneurial structure and function. An entrepreneur is a carrier of structure and a structure of a career.
