Unemployment occurs when people who are able to work are unable to find suitable, paid jobs for a tangible period of time. According to the official statistics, 38 per cent of the population that falls within the employable age are unemployed. Again, 65 per cent of Nigerian youths were battling unemployment as of September 2016.
The high level of unemployment in Nigeria is caused partly by the rapid growth in population. There has been an increase in the number of young and agile people, but with the supply of jobs is inadequate. This has increased the population in cities, thereby raising the level of joblessness.
Another cause of unemployment is poor leadership and high level of corruption. The failure of the government to perform its constitutional duties has resulted in high levels of unemployment.
Corruption among politicians has resulted in the mismanagement of the funds and resources that ought to be used to createjob opportunities for the people.
The consequences of unemployment include reduction in the national output of goods and services, increased rural-urban migration; increase in the number of dependent people, high rate of crime and high level of poverty in.
To overcome the crisis of unemployment, the government must be effective in performing its duties. A conducive socioeconomic environment should be created.
The government needs to do its best to prevent further crisis. And Nigerians also have to play their parts in reducing the level of unemployment in the country.
We need to change our attitude to elections. We should vote for credible people who will make life better.
