Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola has said that the judiciary is facing new challenges and opportunities due to technological innovations.
This is just as he emphasised that judicial officers must stay up-to-date with technological advancements as they have fundamentally transformed communication, access to information, and legal proceedings.
Justice Ariwoola made this known in Kano.on Monday at the 2023 National Workshop for Judges on Legal Issues in Telecommunications, the CJN emphasized the need for a comprehensive framework that balances individual rights, societal responsibilities, and corporate liabilities in the digital era.
He however highlighted the importance of continuous adaptation and enhancement of the regulatory framework by judicial officers to keep up with the evolving nature of technology.
“Advancements in the telecommunications also play a central role in contemporary judicial work and life within and outside the courtroom.”
He urged judicial officers to prioritize exploring the convergence of data privacy and information security law, recognizing the critical questions regarding privacy, security, and the protection of individual rights in the digital realm.
Justice Ariwoola then acknowledged the increasing prominence of the internet in this era and its innovative and interactive influences on the public.
He however discussed the opportunities and challenges presented by virtual reality technology in the administration of justice, emphasizing the importance of addressing ethical and legal dimensions associated with these technologies to maintain public trust and confidence in the judiciary.
Justice Ariwoola therefore cautioned about the health hazards posed by technological innovations and stressed the need to balance technological advancements with safeguarding health.
Earlier, Professor Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), emphasised the importance of judges’ understanding of digital technologies to enable them to make informed decisions on legal matters and contribute to maintaining public trust in the ever-expanding digital landscape.
He then highlighted the collaboration between the NCC and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) to ensure that judges are well-informed about cybercrime and data breaches.
