Tai Solarin Federal University of Education has announced the commencement of Entrepreneurship as a full degree programme.

The acting vice chancellor of the institution, Professor Adekunle Olanrewaju Adeogun, disclosed this during the press briefing to herald the commencement of the 17th convocation ceremonies.

He also said that a dedicated Centre has been created for Entrepreneurial Studies.

TASUED currently has a vibrant vocational education programme by which every graduate, irrespective of course of study, must undergo training in a vocation and pass the requisite university-based examination before graduating from the university.

Professor Adeogun also announced that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 12 new undergraduate programmes and four academic programmes at the doctoral level.

He noted that the TASUED curricula have been continuously reviewed to align with global best practices, with greater emphasis on STEM education, digital pedagogy, entrepreneurship, and inclusive education.

Professor Adeogun also listed notable achievements recorded by the university lately, including increased research productivity, competitive grants won by academic staff, as well as groundbreaking national and international scholarly engagements.

Others are infrastructure development and rehabilitation, including new lecture theatres, laboratories, and improved learning facilities.

“ICT capacity has equally been enhanced to support e-learning, virtual instruction, and digital administration,” he added.

He particularly harped on the subsisting peaceful atmosphere in the institution, stable academic calendar, and serene learning environment, saying that the management had consistently maintained industrial harmony, which resulted in uninterrupted teaching, research, and learning.

The acting vice chancellor acknowledged the donations of friends of the university, particularly Senator Olamilekan Adeola, representing Ogun West, “who donated five minibuses, solar-powered lighting facilities, and computer laptops to the university.

“These contributions have greatly enhanced our mobility, security, and ICT capacity.”

He also acknowledged the assistance of the Chief (Dr.) Dotun Sanusi, the CEO of Ilaji Hotels & Resorts, who he said donated a fully equipped Staff Club building to enhance the welfare and recreational life of the university’s workforce

Other benefactors include Chief Yemisi Shyllon, an internationally renowned art collector and patron of the arts, who donated a statue of educationist and civil rights crusader, Tai Solarin; Dr Taiwo Olayinka Afolabi, chairman, CEO of SIFAX Group of Companies, who donated a staff Guest House (under construction) within the Ijagun campus of the university, among others.

Speaking at the 17th convocation, Professor Adeogun disclosed that a total of 4,785 regular students would be graduating from the university, out of which 40 obtained First Class honours; 1,466 are in the Second Class (Upper Division), and 2,768 are in the Second Class (Lower Division); 492 obtained Third Class, and 19 obtained the Pass degree.

According to the vice chancellor, 269 part-time graduands would be taking part in the ceremony, while the Nigerian Army College of Education (NACOE) graduands are 88.

At the postgraduate level, he said a total number of 356 would be graduating: 73 Postgraduate Diploma in Education, 21 Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) holders, 85 M.Ed, 50 M.Sc, 19 M.A, 5 M. A (Ed), 13 MLIS; and 90 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

“These figures reflect the growing academic strength and postgraduate capacity of the University,” he said.

He also announced that the university would be conferring honorary doctorate on three distinguished Nigerians: First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Doctor of Science in Education (Childhood Education); governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, Doctor of Science in Education (Education Management), and former governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, Doctor of Science in Education (Political Science).
