The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged the Federal Government to take concrete measures against the current economic hardship in the country.
In an Ash Wednesday and Lent message signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN also underscored the spiritual importance of Ash Wednesday and the Lenten period.
CAN called on believers to practice self-examination and to live out the teachings of Jesus Christ by performing acts of love and compassion.
“Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season offer a timely opportunity for self-reflection, repentance, spiritual growth, and renewal. We are called to learn to love and show compassion like Jesus Christ in our everyday lives,” Okoh stated in the statement.
“These ashes remind us that our bodies will return to dust, prompting us to contemplate our purpose and the effects our actions have on the world around us,” he said.
He mentioned that this period is a time to grieve over our sins and those of our nation while seeking divine forgiveness and healing.

Speaking on the state of the nation, CAN said, “Our hearts go out to those struggling to make ends meet amidst financial uncertainty and limited access to basic necessities.”
The statement described the current economic situation in Nigeria and urged the government to recognize the critical nature of these challenges and to take decisive steps in providing aid to those in need.
“I call on our leaders at every level of governance to acknowledge the severity of the economic issues confronting our nation and to take immediate, concrete actions to support individuals enduring economic hardship,” the statement said.
CAN further stressed that while Lent is a season for personal and spiritual growth, it should also be a time of social engagement and advocacy.
“This is a time for us to reach out to those in need and to advocate for sustained support from our leaders in lightening the loads of our fellow citizens,” the statement added.
