Towards tackling unemployment in the country, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has trained 140 youths from all parts of Nigeria in its National Youth Empowerment Programme on vocational training in tailoring and fashion design.
The training held at the National Youth Development Centre, Odeomu, Osun State, for 21 days where the trainees were grilled on the art of sewing clothes.
Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr Sunday Dare, who spoke at the closing ceremony of the training through Mrs Lere Adams, said that the programme will not only ensure economic progress but also promote national progression as crimes would reduce when youths are engaged.
He mentioned also that to achieve the national economic developmental growth and recovery plan in Nigeria, youths have to be strategically invested in.

According to the Permanent Secretary of the ministry represented by Mrs Omotade Olusola, she revealed that the programme was aimed at the capacity building as training the youths is now an important task owing to the rate of unemployment in the country.
The graduands who were recommended by their state also expressed excitement and were grateful to the federal government for the opportunity they had to be trained on the art of tailoring.
“I am going to be sewing after the programme when I get my grant and also appreciate the ministry for the opportunity I got all the way from Kano said Ibrahim Abba.”
Another graduate, Omilana Kehinde, mentioned that prior to the training he has been a tailor but now he would improve on his craft and get himself an industrial sewing machine with his grant.
Dr Kehinde Abiola, chairman governing council, Living Spring College of technology and innovation who delivered the goodwill message at the event thanked the Ministry of youth and sport for the programme and also congratulated the graduands for being beneficiaries of the sustainable livelihood programme.
The graduands after the event are entitled to a startup grant of N150,000 after which they would be monitored by the Federal Government.
The event ended on a high note with trainees modelling some of the cloth they designed themselves.
