Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has ordered a 100-per cent salary raise as the government sharply raised fuel prices, according to local media.
The salary increase, covering state employees, retirees, and military personnel, is the ninth since 2011 when the Syrian war broke out.
The country’s economy has since been mired in an economic crisis.
Prior to the decision, civil officials’ monthly salaries ranged from approximately 10 to 25 dollars depending on the street value of the Syrian pound.
Tuesday saw price increases from the Syrian Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection of roughly 180% for transportation and bakery diesel fuel and about 1650% for regular octane gasoline.
Numerous bus drivers skipped work on Wednesday as a result of the increase in fuel prices, resulting in congestion on the streets.
Food prices have increased by 30 to 100 percent as a result of the price increase.
