The outbreak of strange disease has been reported in some parts of Zamfara State in the beginning of the week.
Findings by Tribune Online gathered that the strange disease which broke out at Bindi in Maru local government area of the state has led to the death of 50 people.
A resident of the town, Mallam Awwal Bindi told Tribune Online that most of the victims of this strange disease were children and women.
He said, “Those that were attacked with the illness would be seen come out with blood in the eyes, nose and ears. Before they would give up the ghost they asked for water.”
According to him, “we have so far buried 50 people who were attacked by this strange disease and conveyed some children to Gusau the state capital for medication.”
Though, it was not clear what was responsible for the outbreak of this strange disease, but a source who pleaded for anonymity disclosed that it would not be unconnected to lead poisoning. According to source, the village was affected by lead poisoning attack in 2010 where over 200 children died as a result of the poison.
“Even though, the miners have adopted safety measures but they are still involved in illegal mining without recourse to due process.”
To this end, source contended that there is the need to take proactive measures before it spreads to other parts of the state.
Reacting over the development, the state commissioner for Health, Suleiman Adamu remarked that the state government had already deployed some of its health personnel to the area to conduct a thorough investigation on the matter.
“As I am talking to you our health personnel including two medical doctors are already in the village and we are waiting for them to come with their reports.”
