Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District at the upper legislative chamber in Abuja, has awarded scholarships to 223 students from 58 communities within his constituency.
The scholarships, totalling N37 million, are aimed at supporting brilliant students who lack the financial means to pursue their academic aspirations. The event took place on Thursday at CANAN House, Awka.
Expressing his joy in assisting deserving students, Senator Umeh highlighted the importance of education in combating ignorance, poverty, and distress. He emphasised that education is a critical tool for personal and societal advancement.
The scholarship selection process was described as thorough, involving stakeholders, clergy, and community leaders to ensure the most deserving students were chosen.
Umeh’s Foundation has been offering scholarships for the past 17 years, benefiting over 300 university graduates, including doctors and eight PhD holders.
Encouraging the beneficiaries to aim for excellence, Senator Umeh shared stories of past scholarship recipients who have excelled in their respective fields. He assured the students that his support would continue and even increase in the future.
The Senator also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for introducing the student loan initiative aimed at helping less privileged Nigerian students.
Additionally, he announced the appointment of Comrade JohnMary Ejiofor as his senior special assistant on the scholarship programme.
In a show of appreciation, the scholarship recipients assured Senator Umeh that they would make judicious use of the funds to achieve their life goals.
The initiative was themed “Anambra Central Scholarship Programme.”
